The Mackinaw Coat has a generous fit designed for layering. Order your usual size if you plan to wear it over sweaters, flannels, or other cold-weather layers. If you prefer a trimmer, more fashion-forward fit, consider sizing down. If you are 6' or taller, you might consider our tall sizes.
-
The Mackinaw Coat is made from heavy, densely woven 26-ounce wool that naturally blocks wind, insulates, and breathes. Because it isn't insulated, warmth will vary depending on your activity level and what you wear underneath. For many people, it's one of their warmest coats. If you're looking for maximum warmth, consider our Double Mackinaw Coat, which adds a second layer of 26-ounce wool across the chest.
-
No. The Mackinaw Coat is intentionally unlined, following the design of traditional wool coats. Instead, it relies on heavy 26-ounce, 100% wool to provide warmth, breathability, and long-lasting durability.
-
Both coats are made from the same premium 26-ounce, 100% wool from American Woolen Company. The Double Mackinaw Coat features a second layer of wool across the chest for added warmth in extreme cold. If you prefer a lighter, less bulky coat with room for layering, the Mackinaw Coat is an excellent choice.
-
Yes, especially in snow. Wool can absorb up to 35% of its weight in moisture while still providing warmth, making the Mackinaw Coat an excellent choice for heavy, wet snow and cold outdoor activities like hunting, ice fishing, or snow blowing. It isn't waterproof, however, so it's not intended for prolonged exposure to heavy rain.
-
Dry cleaning is the best way to care for your Mackinaw Coat. Spot cleaning can work for small stains as needed. If the coat becomes wet, allow it to air dry away from direct heat or sunlight. Never machine dry your wool coat.

The jacket is warm, moderately windproof and breathable due to thick and tightly woven material. I like that the jacket is unlined so that it breaths when you are active. It is comfortable walking/hiking in temps in the 20's over a long sleeved base layer and wool shirt. It is generously cut so you could add another layer for colder temps. I have found unlined nylon and softshell jackets are very windproof but don't breath well and so you end up taking them off after a period of activity and then get cold. I also like that it insulates well when damp. The collar covers your neck well when up. If you get too warm you can tie it around your waist. The coat is tough enough for hiking in the woods but looks nice enough to wear for sharp casual.

I really liked this coat, it was well made and warm. Unfortunately it only comes in a size Medium and I wear a size small. The size chart on the website was incorrect and the size medium had a much larger chest then it specified when I actually got the jacket. I would have given 5 stars but the sizing was an issue. Still a great Wool jacket made in America

I recently bought 2 mackinaws from SK. The first one was delivered within a few days, regretfully the USPS still hasn’t delivered the second coat after two weeks. The great folks at SK have sent me another coat with of course the understanding that if the lost one shows up then I will send it back to SK. What a wonderful company, old time customer service that is almost non existent with other American companies. I was a regional VP for a large US company that employed me for 41 years before I retired. I thought we had excellent customer service but no where near as personal and responsive as SK. Just like the customer service Dept slogan at SK reads “ the only thing our reps can’t do for you over the phone is serve you coffee and Pie! For many years I bought from Filson on almost all outdoor clothing needs. After finding SK I found superior quality and a better fit from SK. Additionally the SK pricing is reasonable and a good value. Thanks SK. I will be back for more! ~~ Thank you so much for your kind words about our customer service team - they are pretty great! And welcome to the Stormy Kromer family! ~~

This should be marketed at best as a spring/fall sort of thing. It's implied by the photos and marketing that you are getting a robust jacket fit for winter climates. It's made of lighter stuff than most of my woolen shirts. It is NOT a winter coat suitable for places with snow. It'd be fine for 30 degree days or something but it's not going to hold up under any sort of real winter conditions. A real dissapointment. ~~Sorry the coat wasn't what you expected. It is made from our heaviest wool, but depending on your comfort level, it may not be warm enough in the middle of winter. You can always return it for a full refund within 90 days of purchase. Please call our customer service team if you need assistance at 888-455-2253. SK ~~

I was looking for a great wool coat and this one certainly delivers. The quality is excellent! It does seem to run large but it fits perfectly when paired with a wool sweater. I will be enjoying this coat for a long time.

I absolutely LOVE my Mackinaw Coat! It looks so nice and I have gotten so many compliments on it that I am proud to wear it anywhere. It took me a little while to finally decide if I wanted to buy one or not, but it was 100% worth it. A great piece of legendary clothing that is made in the USA.

I live in the Tongass, a northern temperate rain forest, at 57 degrees North Latitude. This coat is nearly perfect from October through April over layers and may even find use during the Summer months. The quality of materials and workmanship are superb. On me, the coat provides plenty of room for multiple layers. It is a dense enough weave that it keeps out wind and rain. The generous collar turned up is almost as good as a hood for protection.
