Frequently Asked Questions

The Mackinaw Cap uses premium 26-ounce, 100% wool from American Woolen Company in Connecticut. It's slightly heavier than the wool blend used in the Original Stormy Kromer Cap and matches the wool used in our Button Vest, Mackinaw Coat, and Double Mackinaw Coat.
-
Use a soft tape measure to measure around your head where you like your hat to sit. Divide that measurement by 3.14 (π), then round up to the nearest 1/8. This is your Stormy Kromer hat size. If you don't have a tape measure, you can also use a piece of string and measure it against a ruler. Please remember that these hats generally do not stretch over time. If your measurement falls between sizes, or if you prefer a looser fit, we recommend sizing up.
-
The Mackinaw Cap is designed for cold-weather comfort, but how warm it feels depends on the person and the conditions. Wool provides natural warmth while remaining breathable, making it a great choice for cool to cold weather. If you regularly spend extended time outdoors in extreme cold, consider one of our insulated styles or hats with longer earbands for additional warmth.
-
Simply slide your thumb between the earband and the cap, then pull the earband down over your ears. There's no need to untie or unfold anything. When you're ready, just pull it back up into place for the classic Stormy Kromer look.
-
For most people, the Mackinaw Cap's earband covers about one-half to two-thirds of the ear. Because everyone's head shape and ear placement are different, coverage will vary. If you're looking for more coverage or added warmth in extreme cold, Stormy Kromer also offers styles with longer earbands and additional insulation.
-
Dry cleaning is the best way to care for your Mackinaw Cap. For small spills or stains, spot cleaning is often enough. If your cap gets wet from rain or snow, let it air dry naturally away from direct heat or sunlight. Never put your wool cap in the dryer, as the heat can cause it to shrink.

I have had two caps for a few years now. One is an olive color Original and the other is a grey Mackinaw. They are both impressive in quality and function. I am a General Contractor/Home Builder and enjoy wearing high quality garments and these fit the bill perfectly. My daughter's fiancee is a Farmer/Sheep Rancher which means he is out in the elements a lot so for Christmas this year I purchased him an Original and he is in love with it! The problem is he is afraid of getting it dirty so I guess I will be getting him a Mackinaw for a second hat. It will be interesting to see if he can tell a difference between the two. Thank you for a fine product! -John

This is my second Kromer. Bought the Original hat years ago. Now I have one for work and one for play. Quality of the Kromer is unmatched. Made in the USA. Living in Nebraska winters get pretty cold. -Brent

The red and black plaid Mackinaw was my first kromer. What a great hat. Not only does it form to your head, it is extremely comfortable and warm. I wear it outside around the house in the winter as well as ice fishing, and in Michigan that can mean some pretty cold temperatures. I have since purchased an original in the camo and soon will be purchasing a rancher. -andy

After ordering a Flexible Fit Kromer and absolutely loving it, I decided to go all the way and get an Olive Mackinaw Cap. It is incredibly comfortable and looks great! This is my first fitted hat, and I seem to have over-measured my head a bit, but I love this hat even without the Kromer "bite." Totally comfortable and very warm, I think this hat will last forever. Great product! -James J.

This is a fine hat. I was fortunate enough to receive one for Christmas. What a wonderful piece of gear! The wool is soft and warm. It blocks the wind effectively. I wore it tobogganing one evening with the ear flaps pulled down and it did not budge from my head. The Olive looks very sharp (can't comment on the other colors because I don't own them). It is nicely finished. The flannel lining is a nice touch as is the discrete embroidery on the back and the great story on Story Kromer inside the hat. I WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND.Plus it is made in the UP! What else do you need to know.Have a Stormy day! -F. Elder

I received my first Stormy Kromer Cap today (12/17/2008) via UPS. I ordered the Red/Black Plaid Mackinaw Cap and I am very pleased with the fit, quality and warmth. I live in Chester, Virginia; the temperature tonight is 17 degrees. I am so pleased with this cap that I now plan to order the Olive and Gray ones. -Anson Garrett
